About Monarch School Montana

Established by Patrick McKenna more than a decade ago, the school was founded to offer youths a chance to discover themselves in a stable and supportive environment. Utilizing a holistic teaching approach and small classes, as well as an outdoor program integrated with the beautiful Montana surroundings, Monarch School encourages its students to develop self-confidence and interpersonal skills that will benefit them throughout life.

A fully supportive environment, Monarch School places each newly enrolled student with a peer group and a Peer Leader. The Peer Leader organizes biweekly group therapy sessions and individual therapy time at least once a week in order to track each student’s growth and emotional state. The school encourages healthy lifestyle and nutritional habits via academic courses and school meals, and the facility offers additional programs for addiction therapy or transition therapy as needed. Parents are encouraged to maintain steady communication with their child’s Peer Leader, and regular parent conferences are scheduled throughout the academic year.

Monarch School provides numerous academic, fine arts, and vocational classes, allowing students to engage their minds, bodies, and emotions over the course of the curriculum. After selecting three core subjects, students then choose two classes in fine arts and one course in vocational studies. Core subjects include English, Science, Math, Social Studies, and Foreign Language, while Visual Arts, Music, Theater Arts, and Sewing are Fine Arts courses. Culinary Arts, Equestrian Studies, Life Skills Instruction, and Woodshop and Construction are all available as part of the school’s vocational studies. Students also benefit from a robust outdoor program, integrating day trips and even family trips into the breathtaking locations available in northwestern Montana. Monarch School’s unique twelve-month program, broken into 10-week courses, typically equates to one and a half years of high school academics, and admissions are open to youth in ninth through 12th grade.
